Joe Pyle, MA
President
“More than 200 years ago, Thomas Scattergood helped establish Friends Hospital because he believed people experiencing mental illness deserved dignity, compassion, and care. That idea still guides us today. Investing in behavioral health means caring for people before they reach a crisis by strengthening communities, preventing harm, and addressing the conditions that shape wellbeing. It’s how we carry Thomas Scattergood’s legacy forward and build a system that truly supports people.”
Joe Pyle has more than 30 years of experience in philanthropy and behavioral health care leadership. As the founding President of the Scattergood Foundation, he has guided the organization for more than 20 years, establishing it as a leader in Philadelphia-based philanthropy and a nationally recognized advocate for behavioral health. Under his leadership, the Foundation has advanced policy and systems change, challenged stigma, strengthened nonprofit organizations, and elevated community voice and lived experience in philanthropic decision-making.
Joe has built partnerships with philanthropic leaders across the country through initiatives including the Think Bigger Do Good Policy Series and Mindful Philanthropy, helping make behavioral health a national policy and funding priority. He has also championed nonprofit capacity building, participatory grantmaking, evaluation, storytelling, and community-driven solutions. During his tenure, the Foundation has invested more than $23 million in behavioral health and community wellbeing, leveraged an additional $17 million from funding partners, and grown its endowment while expanding its commitment to mission-aligned investing.
Joe holds a Master of Arts in School Psychology from Glassboro State University, now Rowan University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Special Education from La Salle University. He serves on several nonprofit boards and lives in Philadelphia with his wife.
