The African Family Health Organization (AFAHO) addresses unmet needs among members of the African and Caribbean immigrant and refugee communities in Greater Philadelphia who experience difficulties accessing health and human services due to cultural, geographic, linguistic, and other barriers.
African Family Health Organization (AFAHO) was funded to sustain culturally responsive health, wellness, and economic mobility services for African and Caribbean immigrants and refugees. Funding will support staff capacity and wellness, organizational operations, program development, and a new counseling program for women affected by female genital cutting.
AFAHO received support for the culturally and linguistically responsive health, social, and educational services it provides to African and Caribbean immigrant and refugee communities in Greater Philadelphia. With an asset-based, holistic approach, AFAHO supported communities through programs ranging from reproductive and behavioral health to youth empowerment, adult literacy, and transitional housing for domestic violence survivors. Their recent expansion included a free clinic in Delaware County to better serve uninsured community members.
AFAHO received support for its Reducing Environmental Stress Together (REST) Initiative to address the mental health needs of African and Caribbean immigrants and refugees in Greater Philadelphia. The initiative provided culturally and linguistically responsive support groups and one-on-one counseling while also developing tools to measure wellbeing and self-efficacy within immigrant communities. Funding also supported the creation of a network of mental health providers equipped to meet the linguistic and cultural needs of African and Caribbean immigrant and refugee populations.
AFAHO received a grant for its Reducing Environmental Stress Together (REST) Initiative. The REST Initiative addressed the mental health needs of African and Caribbean immigrants and refugees (ACIR) in Greater Philadelphia through direct provision of support groups and one-on-one counseling that is language specific and integrates cultural relevancy for ACIR community members. Funding also supported the development of a tool specifically designed to measure the wellbeing and self-efficacy of ACIRs, and development of a network of mental health providers responsive to ACIR linguistic and cultural needs.
The African Family Health Organization was funded to contract Arabic-, Kiswahili-, and French-speaking clinicians to lead community wellness calls and provide individual counseling for African and Caribbean immigrant women and families experiencing pandemic-related stress and mental health needs.
