Support Program for Families Grieving an Overdose Death

Overdose Prevention and Community Healing Fund

Eluna’s Camp Mariposa program works to support youth affected by substance use disorder (SUD) of a family member. Children and teens attend transformational camps and participate in fun, traditional camp activities combined with education and support sessions led by mental health professionals.

About

Eluna’s Camp Mariposa program works to support youth affected by substance use disorder (SUD) of a family member. Children and teens attend transformational camps and participate in fun, traditional camp activities combined with education and support sessions led by mental health professionals. As an extension of Camp Mariposa, Eluna will be piloting bereavement support for youth experiencing the loss of a close family member due to an overdose or SUD. This project will focus on support for the entire family and will also serve as a new program model that can be replicated to support more families in Philadelphia through Eluna’s programs and beyond. The first component of this project would be to plan and host 2-day camps at a traditional campground in the greater Philadelphia area that combine outdoor activities, expressive arts, cooperative play, and trauma-informed approaches to support youth and families impacted by an overdose or SUD related death. The second component will be an overnight camp for youth and families after the day camps so they will be able to participate in more traditional camp activities enhanced with additional educational and therapeutic elements. Both components will be offered at no charge and will include overnight accommodations, transportation, meals, program supplies, and comfort items.
