Daring to Do Good: Reflecting on 20 Years

Feb 6, 2025

2025 marks the 20th anniversary of the Scattergood Foundation. Named for 18th century Quaker minister Thomas Scattergood, the Foundation aims to carry on his legacy of advocating for centering the dignity, respect, kindness, and love for individuals with mental illness. In his time, Scattergood was a daring innovator and forward thinker; he founded Friends Hospital in 1812 and brought the revolutionary movement of moral treatment to the United States. His influence lives on in modern psychiatric care, with an emphasis on humane treatment and social support for individuals with mental illness.

Daring to Do Good, the Scattergood Foundation has partnered with organizations across the Philadelphia region, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and nationally to shift the paradigm and practice for behavioral health, to recognize the unique spark and basic dignity in every human.

This year, we reflect on our work and share programs that have moved us toward our vision of building a stronger, more effective, compassionate and inclusive society where behavioral health is central. We will also share how we are looking toward the Foundation’s future and how we will continue to uphold the values that Thomas Scattergood held dear.
