Project Description:
Cognitive Health Innovations offers (via http://www.copingtutor.com ) the first clinically-validated web and mobile platform with integrated peer and professional support for delivery of evidence-based psychological help. Our software platform is focused on helping people initially with schizophrenia, but in the future can address the needs of people with a broad range of mental health conditions from schizophrenia, to anxiety and depression. The platform is designed to be used individually or in a peer-supported mode, or in a professionally-supported mode as an adjunct service for therapists or other medical professionals.  We include:
  1. Training and games to teach proven  techniques
  2. Web and mobile tools that help users implement those techniques
  3. Educational tutorials  and exercises
  4. Integrated monitoring to assist users and therapists in tracking client progress.
We are developing and refining a modern, web/mobile platform for psycho-education and peer-support, with a focus on serious mental illnesses. The CHI platform is designed to work as a service that is complimentary to existing treatments.
Creativity and Innovation:
Copingtutor.com has been developed by professionals who have worked at creative and innovative companies in the Silicon Valley - like Apple Computer, and other venture-capital funded startup companies.  We've innovated in the following ways:
  1. We've integrated modern software technologies and approaches to develop an Internet software platform, and proven therapeutic approaches, that can be applied across a broad range of behavioral health problems.
  2.  We've integrated computer games and structured social interaction to make our program interesting, entertaining, and engaging - with the result that we have extremely high rates of completion of our program, with clinically-validated success in helping people with serious mental health issues related to schizophrenia.
  3.  We've partnered with top experts in our field (psychologists from Harvard, Boston University, UCSF, and University of North Carolina) in the development of the program and in the clinical validation of the program.
  4. We're providing software that can be used both on computers, and mobile devices (i.e. smart phones, ipads, etc.) so that people can have access to clinically validated help when and where they need it.

Leadership:
We are leading this market in helping people with behavioral health problems, in the following manner:1. We are building Internet-based programs that are of a design that has never been provided before - providing a model for other groups to evaluate and emulate.2. We are working closely with top academic groups, and leading mental health / behavioral health research groups to validate our software in clinical trials, and these academic groups will publish research results in leading research publications so that other groups can learn from our efforts and apply similar approaches in their own programs and efforts.3. We are doing outreach to global groups that can learn and use this software - including community mental health organizations, early psychosis intervention groups,  and national mental health systems that can use this type of software to improve outcomes in their populations.
Sustainability:
The organization is structured as a self-funding corporation - with payments by users of the software designed to fund ongoing development and support of the product.  Strongly positive user demand indicates that this will be a sustainable and growing organization.  Additional investments by outside groups can further accelerate our company's growth and ability to meet the large market demand. Clinical trials funded by NARSAD/Brain and Behavior Research Foundation, and the Center for Medicaid and Medicare Innovation, taking place at leading universities are demonstrating that our software is effective and enjoyable to use.
Replicability:
Our success can be replicated in many ways.1. We can replicate the success that we are having with the schizophrenia populations, with other behavioral health populations.2. We are working closely with top academic groups, and leading mental health / behavioral health research groups to validate our software in clinical trials, and these academic groups will publish research results in leading research publications so that other groups can learn from our efforts and replicate our successes in other markets, other languages, and other populations.3. Our mobile and web design, and Internet access model, means that the new programs being initiated at behavioral health groups around the world using our software can be very quickly duplicated by other groups and individuals around the world that want to begin using this technology.4. Our approach leverages proven therapeutic approaches (including cognitive behavioral therapy) and techniques that integrate with existing models of behavioral help around the world - as an adjunct form of assistance.
Results/Outcomes:
We are working closely with top academic groups, and leading mental health / behavioral health research groups to validate our software in clinical trials, and these academic groups will publish research results in leading research publications.Clinical validation of our software has been funded by research grants from prominent research groups, including The Brain and Behavior Research Foundation (previously NARSAD). The service is currently in clinical trials at Boston University (Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation) and other academic centers. The first clinical study has been completed, demonstrating statistically significant effectiveness, and a research paper is expected to be published this year. Over 85% of users say the program is helpful and easy to understand and use. A randomized control study is in process, and a large (700 person+), three-year, multi-site study is starting soon, funded by a grant from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation, one of the most selective and prestigious medical research funding organizations.
